Winter was quickly approaching and, since I had only been living on the shore for seven months at the time this was taken, it was also my first time tracking the ponies as they moved south into the backcountry. I often resorted to walking on foot to find them, which meant I left the park each weekend with sore legs, a throbbing shoulder, and sometimes bruised toes. By late morning I found Bayberry as he stood guard over his harem, the largest on Assateague Island National Seashore at the time, as he grazed near Tingles Island.
